My problem with Scott Snyder

Provocative title much?

Indeed. But I do actually have points to make. I have read every issue of his New 52 Batman run, and I have never been that amazed by almost of his issues. Looking back, I cannot think of anything beyond the two big events, and then I actually look back and see, well, that is all his run has been. Really long events that have left me bored, with no change between issue 1 and 18. No status quo change, no lasting impacts that did not happen in other titles and no new additions beyond one, who seems to have people divided.

But then I look closer, and find some individual stories tucked away inbetween his far too long, gruellingly long really, stories. Issues 12, the Annual and 18 all were self-contained stories, and were far better for it. They told a story, got to the point and then let you move on to the next tale. Shame the next tale was then long, tied into most of the Bat Family titles - though not Batwoman, which in its run has had much in the way of change in the same amount of time, working with multiple characters and superheroes and yet not impacting on any other books.

Now, this piece is not about Batwoman, but considering the very similar premise, the fact they have been running for the same amount of time (circa New 52) and yet one, even at its worst, would never be something I considered boring. Her cousin gets attacked, maimed and has to retrain to be a superhero. She gets enlisted into a government agency. She sort of cheats on her girlfriend. There is a team up with Wonder Woman. She reveals her identity and proposes to her girlfriend. Her crazy sister comes back from the dead. All with little to no fanfare from the hype machine.

Unlike Batman.

Nothing happens between issue 1 and issue 18 that is a direct change in the status quo, even when teased and said otherwise. Batman is still Batman, Nightwing is still Nightwing, Batgirl is still Barbara and not Steph or Cassandra (no, I will not let that go, especially with something I talk about later). No girlfriend or otherwise interested party to work in his personal life. Everything is left how it began, the pieces back into their starting positions.

Even Teen Titans, a title that went from very good (pre -New 52) to one of the worst (but hilarious in a terrible way) series, has managed to change the status quo. Characters have changed, come and left etc, even if it has been in such a mishandled and terrible way. But hey, back to Batman.

Not only does nothing seem to change, of the two stories told so far, because that is all there has been, both Night/Court of the Owls and Death of the Family have the same structure. Just look back at them, they have the same structure, the same conventions, the same threat. They seem to know who Batman is, how to target him, to involve his Bat Family, to have a secret in his past. And so on.

Repetitive. And what is repetition if not boring?

Well, it might be recursion. Oh ho ho. With that terrible joke out of the way, we shall move on to my next topic - women.

Or,  more specially, women in the New 52 Batman. How many can you name? Two, and one of them is Batgirl? Who guest stars less than any of the Robins (including Nightwing), in maybe part of an issue or two and she wears heels, something she does not wear in her own title. Because, as we all know, women in comics have no calf muscles.

Minor quibbles with artwork aside, the fact that the title is so, well, male dominated is a bit strange actually. Yes, a male focus is fine, desired even. It is Batman after all. And there it is, this is Batman. He is known to be involved with many women, some not for long, others for a while. In 18 issues there has not been a hint of his personal life in that direction that I can remember. Nor almost anything of a personal life at all.

This is a series with even less than Nolan's trilogy, which while having people of both genders popping up, it feels really quite an asexual environment, even when there is romance. Anyway, a slight diversion really.

The lack of personal developments does seem to be hindrance - Bruce is not Batman 24/7, even if Batman is the real man. Why not feature more on his personal interactions, on his relationship with Alfred? Something we are just assumed to take for granted. Not something I am comfortable with, not when this is meant to be a reboot.

Imagine an issue or two with a love interest for Alfred. It would build more on the dynamic, test the waters between the two. Someone who is dating something in his house, who has no interest in Bruce. Could he trust her, would he push her away to keep Alfred to himself? Could it show a new side to Bruce that would be interesting to see once?

Or perhaps a story of Batman on the streets, just a night in his life. The people he sees, the darkness of Gotham, and perhaps a smidgeon of light, engulfed by the monster that is the city?

But nope. We get two big stories and two single issue breaks. Wonderful. Both of which feature the only other female character in Batman - Harper Row. Someone who, while interesting, does feel rather similar. Some names ring bells, some no longer among us.
Jason. Tim. Steph.

Why does she seem so much like an amalgamation of them? Especially when not all of them currently exist.

And that they both also act as another character looking at Batman. And these are the most interesting issues? They have a personal connection, dealing with a family, the stuff inbetween. Not just one fight, one event after another.

Oh, and the amount of things that are impossible? According to Batman, those pancakes would be. And the brownies.

As a brief summary, no, I do not think Scott is a bad writer. But he needs to write shorter stories, actually change the dynamics round, which Harper might end up doing and focusing more on the future and not the secrets he keeps inventing for Bruce to have done or kept?

Wait, what is that? His next arc is a 10 part look at Batman's past?

Oh.

Well, never mind then. This is going to suck...

Two pence on the DC Reboot

I know, I am terrible posting anything to a schedule. This is my first, in what, a year? Anywho, DC Reboot time. Woo, I am so not excited at all for this. And here is why:

Action Comics - Grant Morrison on Superman? I love All-Star Superman, and I love Grant's work, so yeah, I will give this a shot.

All-Star Western - I never cared for the Jonah Hex book, so, yeah, this does not hold any appeal for me.

Animal Man - Having seen the cover for the first issue, I have been put off completely from this. Shame, as I do not dislike the character, but with a cover like that, I wonder who it is amained for.

Aquaman - Regardless of anything else, it is Aquaman, I have to buy this.

Batgirl - So, I really like the current series, with Steph in it, and I like Cassandra too. But Barbara as Batgirl? No, she was always better as Oracle, and become a far more interesting character because of this. Now, with none of the others in sight, and being written by Gail Simone, who people say is a good writer though I have never experienced one good story written by her, and this is the most disappointing change here. My favourite series, and a constantly highly rated one at that, gone? Yeah, way to go DC.

Batman - I picked up Batman when Judd Winick was writing, and tried to get into Tony Daniel, but could not, and promptly dropped it. And I have no ideas of picking it up again any time soon.

Batman & Robin - Bruce and Damian instead of Dick and Damian? Just does not seem right, I really liked the Dick/Damian aspect of this series.

Batman: The Dark Knight - I never cared about this series before, and I am not going to start now.

Batwing - Maybe, I do not know. They seem to be marketing this as "Look, this Batman is black", which is not a good strategy. Maybe Judd Winick will make this work, I will give it a flickthrough.

Batwoman - Whenever this finally comes out, as I have been waiting over a year for this, hell yes. This is one of the few titles I am guaranteed to buy straight away, no hesitation, because I actually want to read it.

Blackhawks - Pffft, yeah right. No.

Blue Beetle - I like the character, but it is odd to have Jaime and not Ted. Personally, I would have had both, doing a mentor style book, as they do not have one of these now, now that they got rid of titles such as Batgirl (yes, I am still going to go on about that).

Birds of Prey - Whatever, by this point I just do not care anymore...

Captain Atom - JT Krul and a character I am not a fan of, I think not.

Catwoman - Not a real fan of the character, but it is written by Judd Winick. Maybe.

Deathstroke - Costume looks, how do we say, interesting? But the Titans run with him in does bode well for this, so no.

Demon Knights - No idea about this, so no.

Detective Comics - I only bought this when Batwoman or the Question was in it, and without either of those, and with Tony Daniel writing, this is a big no.

DC Universe Presents - Nothing about this screams interesting, so no.

Flash - I have never been a Flash fan, so nope.

Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE - Only time I have seen him was in Final Crisis, and from that, I muster up a meh.

Fury of Firestorm - I do not really care about Firestorm, and it is written by Gail Simone, so, this is a no for me.

Green Arrow - I really do not like JT Krul, but it is Green Arrow, and so, like Aquaman, I have to get this...

Green Lantern - I got fed up of the Green Lantern storyline, it just seemed as though Geoff Johns was burnt out, and I cannot bothered to give it another go.

Green Lantern Corps - Same story here.

Green Lantern: The New Guardians - And here.

Grifter - Something else that I know nothing about...

Hawk & Dove - Birds of Prey and Brightest Day made me dislike these characters. I did mind the inclusion of them in BoP, but as I said above, I do not enjoy Gail Simone's work. So this one is a no.

I, Vampire - Who, what, huh? No.

Justice League - I never buy these individually, only as collected editions, so I shall see if it is worthwhile then. Suffice to say, I do not expect much, as I was enjoying James Robinson's League, and this just, well, most of the original League again. But, Aquaman is in it…

Justice League Dark - stupid name, few characters I care for, meh.

Justice League International - Now, this, on the other hand, looks interesting. A diverse set of lesser-known characters, including Vixen, I think I will give it a go.

Legion Lost - See below.

Legion of Superheroes - I got a bit fed up in the last series, and gave it up. Going to keep with that for this one.

Men of War - No idea what this about, so probably not.

Mister Terrific - The costume is horrible, I am not hugely interested in the character, and I have no idea who Eric Wallace is, so, no.

Nightwing - That costume is just bad. Plain bad. And where the hell does this DC reboot make any sense on established characters? Yes, I know it is a reboot, but what that really means is that it is just another screw in continuity.

OMAC - I think I share my opinions with most people: avoid any comic written by Dan Didio.

Red Hood and the Outlaws - Pffft, after what DC did to Roy Harper and his family, and how I dislike Starfire, I will be avoiding this. Also, a baseball cap? Really?!?

Red Lanterns - Yeah, just no.

Resurrection Man - Well, this was a surprise. I liked this in DC One Million, so I might give this a go.

Savage Hawkman - Written by Tony Daniel? No thanks...

Static Shock - I sortof like the character, but never bought his book, and the TV show was alright. Doubtful I will pick it up.

Stormwatch - Gay Superman/Batman and Martian Manhunter? Odd choice of team-up there, but hey, it seems slightly interesting. Flickthrough.

Suicide Squad - What the hell happened to Harley? Just looks so so stupid, and nothing about this looks good, so no.

Superboy - Never cared for the character, know nothing about the writer, so no.

Superman - As for the main Superman book, never really been a fan of the character, except mostly in Elseworld titles (All-Star, Red Son, etc), so no.

Supergirl - Silly costume, though the writers have done some good stuff. Doubtful I would actually buy this though, maybe it will get a flickthrough.

Swamp Thing - I really could not care less about it.

Teen Titans - Those costumes are, well, stupid. And I do not care for the writers really. And there is no Miss Martian or Ravager in sight.

Voodoo - I do not know anything about this, so doubtful.

Wonder Woman - I do not tend to read WW, only flicking through it on occasion. And I cannot say I have read anything by Brian Azzarello either...

4 series I will be getting, and 6 flickthroughs. That is not good, as it is highly doubtful I will actually buy any of the ones I flickthrough. Plus, DC have almost entirely lost all my goodwill, what with Batgirl going and Bryan Q. Miller (also of Smallville fame), not getting a replacement book. In fact, the only thing I am actually looking forward to, what with Geoff's treatment of Aquaman etc, is Batwoman, and as I said before, I have been waiting over a year for that. Not good at all...

And this is not getting started on what I feel about reboots (bad idea), the removal of things like the JSA (another bad idea), or putting characters how they were when they first created (again, a bad idea). Spot a trend there?

One Review, An Explanation and A Schedule

Right, now, as everyone who follows me at all might know that I've been VERY bad at getting back to people, letting conversations slide and all that. Well, the reason for that is very simple. I've been very knackered, and jus haven't got round to replying >.< I have about 30 posts to comment on, all in their own window, so I will get round to it, at some point. And yes, I know it is a slappable offence.

Anywho, I will be better at replying from next week - I finish work at the end of next week, and so from Sunday I will be free to do whatever I please. Which means lots of booze, gambling and hookers. *Beat* No wait, it'll be clothes designs, comic writing and maybe taking a holiday to the States. I haven't decided yet where or when, but if anyone has ideas or wants to meet up, let me know and we can see what we can arrange. Jus look out for the guy with long red hair and a fedora.

And now, finally, onto the review, and it will only be one, because the entire week disapointed me so much (Brightest Day was lame, with what, not even a page of Aquaman, some really confusing ass Martian Manhunter stuff, etc etc. Urge), Atlas (erm, so who the hell is this 3D-Man and why should I care? I wanted to read about the Agents of Atlas dammit) and my actual review. The good though were The Spirit (mediocore really, but enjoyable enough), DCU Legacies (enjoyed the stories on this, people living in a superhero world, good premise and all), Legion of Super-Heroes (passable, though when did Saturn-Woman have kids [though not any more, haha. It's like a dead baby joke...] and there were a few confusing moments, but it was alright) and Zatanna (tad disappointed, could've been so much more). But now, without further ado, it's on to the actual review, and if you read my blog at any point, you know what's coming. It's X-Men Pixie Strikes Back by Kathryn Immonen and Sara Pichelli. Fun times all round.

OK, now, this comic was just painful to read. Really, physically painful. I think I've got a brain injury from reading it. The plot makes sense, in a consistent sense anyway. But the way it's structured, the way the characters act, they way they talk is all wrong. And it's not just this series - Kathryn should not be writing comics in my opinion. Both Runaways and this have been utter disasters when she's been writing, hampered by her complete and utter inability to write something of any sense. The plot is just stupid, the writing is bad, characters don't act as they should do, scenes and segways are bad, everybody talks in the same disjointed style that Felicia Henderson of Teen Titans uses, I think they went to the same school of BAD WRITERS. URGH

And finally, on a final note on the writing on the final bit of the issue - so Pixie thought she was going home with her mom, but her mom things being with the X-Men is her home. OK, fair enough. But it's badly written and took me three attempts before I realised this. Before I just thought it was sounding stupid writing. Maybe it's my annoyance at Kathryn, I don't know, as I generally get this stuff straight away. It's just all horrible.

And now, on to the artwork. I suppose it's passable in a way, but I think that's more due to the colouring than anything else. I'll give credit where credits due, and the colouring is done in an offbeat, non usual comic standard, and I really think it works. Good work Christina Strain. But now, on to the bad, and first things first: where the hell have Pixie's wings gone? Erm, HELLO? WINGS people, WINGS!
And you know what else? It's comical the size of the breasts on the women in this series. Emma, both Masterminds and Psylocke. Just, wow. So much silicon and plastic in those things eh?

And now, before I pop multiple blood vessels, I'm gonna to stop right here and not review it any more. So, now that that mini-series is over and done with, maybe we can have some competent writers writing Pixie (and the X-Men I suppose). I do have to say with Kathryn writing both the on hiatus Runaways and this series, I did think that with the revelation of Jason being Pixie's dad, I thought she might run away from the X-Men and become a Runaway. But apparently not. I suppose it does save me from watching as Kathryn butchers Pixie some more.

So, and this is the final note, my ending statement, WHERE WERE PIXIE'S WINGS?!? ARGH!

Two Weeks of Reviews

OK, so after curb-stomping the volcano (no picture for it :P), I've got myself two weeks worth of comics. Now, I know, it's a lot, so I'll just review em by week, in alphabetical order. So, without further ado, because these have been delayed for enough as it is, let's get on with the reviews.

- Last Weeks -

Blackest Night: Directors Cut
So, unlike what JT said, I bought this. And it was OK. But then I'm a sucker for anything involving sketchbooks and the like. Though the sketchbook was disappointed when compared to Final Crisis' sketchbook, which had a lot more of the design process and all that. Plus, there was no Jean Loring, Ralph and Sue Dibney or ones like Air Wave and the like. Which was odd. And only two, maybe three at the most, unused characters. Shame really, cause I really like that kindof thing. But that's me, the designer ;) The rest of the stuff was pretty useless really, save the two unused scenes, which I can see why they weren't used, though the Rainbow Raiders one was pretty damn funny.

Green Lantern #53
OK, so, like my GLC review down below, which I wrote before this because it was more fresh in my mind, and because I had it in front of me while this one is at home, I felt this one was just a set-up issue. I mean, sure, it was fine for what it was, setting up the Lantern plot points for the next few issues and all that, but the artwork was eh, not a lot really happened and Indigo-1 didn't appear at all. Oh, and Saint Walker (with SAINT BARRY, shamelessly stealing from X here) in all of 2 pages I think. But Larfleeze with his Guardian, now that, well, slightly creepy there, you know? Though a tad odd. Gives Luthor up, then comes back right away and sees him again. Erm, did I miss something here?

Kato: Origins #1
OK, so this was a nice little tale that's going to be happening for a while - part mystery, part origin, all period. It's nice, gives some background on Kato, who, being part of the whole Green Hornet stuff, I know nothing about, so it's all good to me. I do wonder how much this actually is accurate to the original stories - does anyone know?

The Spirit #1
I thought I would give this one a go, having never read any of stuff on the Spirit before, not seeing the movie (which I'm told was beyond pondscum on stuff you don't want near your eyes). It was alright as a beginning tale, but nothing brilliant. It did leave me wondering why the crooks couldn't catch the Spirit when he was having a meal with the commissioner in broad day light… And the Second Feature was just, er, odd. Not a fan of the art style, and I just couldn't really tell what was happening.

X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back #3
Now, this is the big un of last weeks stuff - the series where they're butchering one of my favourite characters. But, and it seems odd saying this, it wasn't too bad. The story makes more sense, there seems to be an actual tale involved in making her father a villain and her mum a weird ass fairy chick woman. I mean, I could actually tell what was happening for the most part, though whether it was just me or not but the artwork seemed a tad different, not as good as the last two instalments. The X-Men were still written strangely, and Rockslide just looked off in this one, especially on the final page. Oh, and X-23 just annoys me SO very much. You don't get to say that, you don't get to act like she's a horrible person and you're just an annoying character who either just insults others or smashes things because she's emo. That's the only two things I've ever seen her doing, and she just annoys me.

- This Weeks -

Detective Comics #864
OK, now this one I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I was disappointed to learn that Batwoman would not be in Detective Comics anymore, and yet forced to continue reading the Question even as Renee was destroyed as a character in the Second Feature story. But, the main feature was actually quite good - some good moments with Arkham threatening people, although still no explanation for his wacky ol' Black Mask antics. Or how Dick figured it out using the bullets (I still don't get that you know). The Second Feature did just annoy me, I'm not liking where they're going with these characters, but at least it was better than before, and they don't just reveal their identities to every single damn smuck, villain and hired hit-man that comes their way. And I suppose it's always nice to have Vandal Savage, as he hasn't appeared in that much (from my knowledge) - Final Crisis: Revelations (was that the name? I never read it myself), Outsiders: The Deep and now this. Not a truly unique character, but an immortal who isn't emo - now that's unique ;)

Gotham City Sirens #11
Ok, so I called the bit with the Hyenas, Ivy was acting even more of a bitch than normal (surprise surprise there), and this was the normal strong, enjoyable Sirens story with the usual art. If you've been following anyone who read this blogs blog, you'll know this is a good and consistent series which you're already reading.
Does seem a bit odd that this one has been going on for almost a year, but it deserves it - it's a good series, and totally deserves it's own spin-off TV show ;)

Green Hornet #3
OK, part 3 of Kevin Smith's tale of Green Hornet, that was gonna be a movie at some point. Well, I liked this story, though it was a tad predictable after the main even happened. Seems a bit of a shame, but it had some good moments, although it did use the standard old man kicks ass trope. But it did it well, so I suppose that's alright then. The artwork seemed a bit off on a couple of panels, like someone else had done it. But apparently not, so, hmm, just a bit odd.

Green Lantern Corps #47
This was a pretty good setup/ending series, concluding the Blackest Night stuff and beginning the Brightest Day story. And anyway, it was worth the price of admission for seeing Arrisa and the Guardians. Not as good as Red Robin curb-stomping Damian, but it was a good scene.

Husk
Now, this was an impulse buy that I saw on the stands, had a flick through and it looked interesting. It's a French made comic translated into English, and I gotta say, either something was lost in translation, or someone was taking advice on how to write a story by Grant Morrisson and Felicia Henderson. I mean, sure, the story was good, just confusing, and it was all self contained in it's 48 page goodness. Artwork was passable, nothing truly special.

Teen Titans #82
OK, still no impressed with this series. And it seems as if the writer doesn't actually like Aquagirl - she lists Wonder Girl, Raven, Bombshell, Blue Beetle, Beast Boy, Miss Martian, but not Aquagirl or Static. Er, what? And that's on the second page. Plus she wasn't on the cover, yet Static was. Though Cyborg wasn't. And it just gets worse from here. Usual stilted and bad dialogue, unexplained and confusing panel changes. What did Beast Boy turn into to save the Titans - the Phoenix Force? And a Dragon later on? Since when could Gar do mythical animals? And all of them and they couldn't stop fat Superman T-shirt wearing man? Man, these Titans are seeming lamer and lamer each issue… Wasn't impressed with the Ravager Second Feature bit - just no.

The Rise of Arsenal #2
Urgh, do we have do this? I'd much rather read Pixie Strikes back having a baby with Final Crisis then this. Now, I now that's an odd metaphor, but at least those stories made a form of sense of where they were going, and that's saying something, considering my disdain for the direction Marvel are taking with Pixie. So, what happened with this atrocity anyway?
Roy's on drugs, dreaming of failing Lian, pissed off with Ollie for killing Prometheus when he should have done it, annoyed with Mia for not keeping Lian alive, he gets his robot arm then decides he's gonna break his bow because he can't shoot straight and then get attacked by Cheshire because he let Lian die.
A by the numbers idiot plot that I pretty much predicted would happen because I could see straight away the idiotic direction DC are taking with the Arrowclan, and I knew that any old writer could write this awful stuff. It's not a good idea, it's not a good plot, and it's just a damn stupid direction for many a character. I suppose ending my reviews on this horrible horrible comic, and so here's some more and good news. Well, maybe for me anyway. You'll see what I mean when ya read em ;)

Now, I was having a bit of a money spending splurge, which was a really bad idea considering my bank account, but hey, I wanted a sortof treat, and they have looked interesting for quite a while. And so I've bought the Mystic Arcana series (Magik, Black Knight, Scarlett Witch and Sister Grimm). Now, I haven't read it yet - just haven't yet. I've already read seven comics today, and wanted to just do the reviews and have a nap ;)

Now, on a final and completely different note, the releases of the pictures for the new X-Men seem quite quite odd. Have you seen the line-up? Just over half of them are actual mutants, huh. Novel… Still, least Psylocke being a member is always good.

Oh, and the actual final note. We get Iron Man 2 a week earlier than you guys in America. Ha ha - sucks to be you :P Cause I'm seeing it tonight perhaps, and then on Sunday and Tuesday with some different mates I know. Two to three times, and you won't have seen it once. Now that's a two finger salute that would really annoy you Americans. Ha ha :P

Nekron updated

Well, since I'd done the drawing, and I needed to test my tablet and CS4 at home (hadn't had a real chance to use CS4, and hadn't got the tablet working on the old laptop), but now I had, and the best drawing to update was the one I was unhappy with. So here's Nekron again, but done on the computer.

I still think the scythe is too small though :/

Quick-ass Nekron sketch

I don't know why, but I felt like drawing Nekron today. Was just looking up some Blackest Night/Brightest Day stuff, and boom, yep, let's draw Nekron :D I'm not too happy with the left leg (it's squashed around the hip), the scythe (it looks too weedy) or the face (I couldn't get the contours right), the arms aren't right, but it was a quick sketch, so I didn't really care :D it's really quite bad, but hey, it's a nice sunny day outside, and I need to do my shopping *shrug*

This weeks comics in a review?!?!?

Me? Doing some reviews? Say whaaaa? Yes, I know! Well, it's because I got my new laptop last week, and I was setting it up then. Nowadays I can actually use my preferred method of this (which is actually just TextEdit - a nice text editor with a spell checker ;)), which is always good :)

Batman 698
Tony Daniel sure loves his mystery men villains. Now, is it just me or is he also making the villain seem to actually be Riddler? I'm surprised that Tony has stopped drawing these issues, maybe he was too rushed doing both on his last run which caused the quality to slip? Here's hoping so. But I do like Guillem March's art - liked it in Sirens and I like it here. And why does everyone atm insist on Gordon calling Batman - can't he do anything nowadays?
The plots pretty mundane really, another case of showing that Dick is not Bruce, even though last issue it showed he was truly ready to be Batman (finally). At least B&R didn't have much of that, even if it did inflict Damian even more upon us… If you're wondering what I'm talking about, see the subtext - Dick needs Riddler to work everything out, that odd dream sequence and more.
I'm pretty indifferent to this really, and I don't like where DC are taking Riddler either. This arc will probably be done just in time for Bruce to retake the mantle. Urgh, another thing that wasn't needed. If I'd killed a character, I'd make sure they were dead, unless they truly was a story to tell (of course, there are a couple) and the reasoning on their return has to make sense - Bruce's doesn't, and it's happening so soon after he 'died'. But of course Bruce HAS to be Batman, otherwise the casual fans won't understand what's going on, we can't have him 'Dating Catwoman', which means no T&A shots of Selina etc etc.
And now I've deviated from a comic review into a rant against the current state of Batman comics. Whoops. Wasn't hard though, which is a tad disturbing. Mind you, it's easy to set me off on comic book rants - key topics include stupid storylines, using female characters to sell comics to idiotic horny buggers (I will probably do a proper post on this at some point, it's a key topic I feel quite strongly about - something I will never subscribe to because I just don't understand WHY it appears to be necessary nowadays), writers ruining characters (Immonen!!!) and people with the inability to draw (Federico Dallocchio.)

Green Arrow 32
Speaking of which, I'd much rather have Athena turn me into a spider or a Gorgon cause she's crazy than have to look at this guys art. Extreme? Yes. Painful to look at? Yes. Then it's acceptable *nods*
This story was stupid, but at least it didn't have Roy and Ollie fighting. But I'm sure that's gonna happen at some point. J.T. Krull seems to be a good writer, but quite likely hamstrung by the editors. But some of the things are just stupid. You'll know what I mean when you read it.
GAH

Human Target 3
Well, as per the last 2 issues, I liked this un. Nice art, good silly cheesy action movie like story, yet the main character is pretty genre savvy ;) was slightly disappointed with the shorter than usual Scars story, but hey, that's the 'backup' feature, as it were...

Brightest Day 0
OK, so yeah, I liked this, it shows the vague beginnings of the plan for Brightest Day. Just a few things though:
* They'd better not be making Aquaman emo. ARGH
* How'd they capture Thawne? I don't remember that happening in Blackest Night…
* What IS Maxwell Lord up to?
* I'm glad they're keeping J'onn pretty much the same, with a tinge of hope. It's nice
* How old is Hawk? History finals? O_o and Dove seems like she can fly?
* Is that Kyle's ring of Jade? What's that thing in the top left corner of the same page?
And it seems as if Sinestro is going to be doing the all powerful White Light route again. Fair enough, I suppose

And on the other series covers:
* Brightest Day itself - it's nice Mera is appearing more, but posed like that? Granah
* Green Lantern/GLC - surprise surprise on that plot - but the Indigo's don't appear to be out of the picture yet
* Green Arrow - well, since the ending of Green Arrow, perhaps it'll be Ollie travelling the world, ala a sortof Hard Travelling Heroes thing, perhaps with Speedy tagging along? Nice cover too
* The Flash - yawn. Move along
* JL: Generation Lost - cool, but why are they the only people who remember Max Lord? And isn't Captain Atom dead?
* Birds of Prey - so it's a real Bird themed group this time, with Huntress being the odd one out. Now, I never read the old Birds, so what exactly did Lady Blackhawk provide the group with? And put some proper clothes on Huntress. Grumble…
* Titans: Villains For Hire - I've already talked about this one elsewhere, but it looks interesting and it's written and drawn by the same guys who did Ink, which I liked

Batgirl 9
For the finale there's not much of a review, cause it's Batgirl. It's funny, story is good, and even though I never read Oracle: The Cure (which I heard was terrible), it made sense. Good as always, and am glad Lee's back on art - it seems slightly different to normal, but hey, it's still good. No real complaints here, and no Chris Yost in sight! ;)

A Fan Art Drawing post

What happens when you get someone who's back on their drawing roll, has tones of ideas at his disposal, and a huge amount of paper?

A fan art drawing of Miss Martian of course! If you don't know who that is, for shame. SHAME!

Next up will be Ultimate Psylocke, depending on when I draw her. In both these cases they're sortof practice for my own character, Orchid, whose story is so very complicated I can't be bothered to explain right now. But yeah, for now, enjoy my take on our fish out of water White Martian:

I'm not entirely satisfied with the hair, and definitely not with the face. But hey, it's hard to draw braided beaded hair dammit. And faces, well, I hate drawing faces ;)

Gordon's Alive!

aka, don't read this if you haven't read Blackest Night 8. And no, this isn't a April Fools thread. Trust me on that

Just a short one really, because I just want to say, BOOYAH! THE Arthur Curry is back among the living, as is our favourite Manhunter from Mars. OK, yeah, it was quite good, a good end to a series that dragged on for far too long. But now for the niggles, wiggles and tidbits that I come across when I read a comic.
Man, I think about these things a bit too much sometimes...

* Why is Black Hand considered a bigger threat than the Anti-Monitor?

* Why did they let Sinestro/Larfleeze/Atrocitus go? And where'd Scarecrow go?

* Nekron is such a pussy really. He's actually quite damn pathetic...

* White Lantern Corps costumes were pretty damn cool. As are MM and Aquaman's new costumes (similar to their old ones, but different enough all the same)

* The White Light resurrected those who died in anger, or who weren't at peace during their time in death. Hence no Sue/Ralph Dibney etc. Though that's just my theory.

* What happened with Maxwell Lord? He just kindof faded away...Erm?

* Wait wait wait. Deadman's 'face' was a mask? I thought it was his corroded body given ghostly aspect...

* According to the checklist, they're restarting Green Arrows comic? I'm pretty sure that times in with the end of Rise and Fall. I'm assuming Roy becomes the new Green Arrow. So what's gonna happen to Ollie? Or are we just gonna have three Green Arrows at once, like the Flashs?

* and finally, could the Star Saphires stop dressing like Pink Hookers from Space that I wouldn't touch with a two mile long barge pole?

Holy new post Batman

My goodness. A month has passed without me posting. Wow. Oops... Not that anyone reads these anyway :D Anywho, I might as well talk about couple of comics while I'm here, and show the quite dodgy line art of the Red Hood as I imagine him in Arkham Asylum.

Batman & Robin
First things first, that most variable and well, quite quite mad writer Grant Morrison's latest writings of the Batverse. What oh what to make of these. Grant always has some great ideas, but is let down by his craziness, stupidity and just mad and mostly nonsensical writing. The Batclone from Blackest Knight. Professor Pyg and his pink iPod dance. Damian Wayne. Flamingo. Whatever happened to Bruce's profile/where is he now/what's Hush doing/what do the public think of Bruce etc. Damian Wayne.
Now, I know I said that last one twice, but I'm sure we all agree the only person who should be allowed to write Damian is Bryan Q Millar.

Kick-Ass
I haven't spoken about this at all yet, because it's hard for me to say anything but I want to see this now. Trailers look awesome, comic was awesome, it's funny, graphic and it's written by Mark Millar. Nothing else to add really :D

The Veritable Army of Green Hornet comics
These are coming out from Dynamite, who I'd never heard of before, about a character I knew nothing about. But then I saw the covers and who was writing them: Alex Ross on some of the covers, Kevin Smith on the main line, Matt Wagner on Year One. That's some good names right there. They're actually quite interesting, though it seems Green Hornet doesn't have any major villains, which is always a problem. Sometimes this is nice though, but it does seem he mostly fights faceless mob goons and mob families, which is something that has been done ALOT before...

Blackest Night and Brightest Day
I'm sure we'll all exhausted by Blackest Night now, it's dragged on a little too long, the main issues haven't really moved anywhere and there's been too many formulaic plots in the extra tie ins. If it had just been Blackest Night, GLC and Green Lantern, with one or two extra comics it would be much better. But I'm a bit fed of up it, though the story is good, art's mostly good, there's just been too much of it. I mean, it's been going on since September.
And it leads straight in to Brightest Day, no respite whatsoever. Here's hoping it focuses less on the Flashes, and more on, say, I don't know, Aquaman. The original and best. And none of this stupid stuff they're doing to Green Arrow and Roy. Let's have Aquaman booting the old one up his arse, bringing the glory of Atlantis back, being pissed off because Tempest is dead, rejoining the Justice League, and making himself a more landbased character, with lots of intercontinental politics, environmental protests and that kindof thing. Seriously, there's so many stories that can be told, let's start cranking em out and having ourselves a ball with our favourite Atlantean.

The Losers
I just got the combined volumes 1 and 2 the other week, and it is sweet. Andy Diggle and Jock, one of the best writer/artist teams there is, telling a pretty cool A-Team esque story. I enjoyed, it's funny, good story and the art is good (save for the bit by the other guy who I can't remember atm for issues 7&8 - I think, might've been 8&9. Can't remember and too lazy to go and grab it to check :D). Movie looks good too, with alot of things from the comic included. Looks to be another good un'

Runaways
I've had a brief flickthrough of both Rock Zombies and Homeschooling in the shop, and I know I'm going to buy them at some point, along with the Civil War and Secret Invasion Young Avenger tie-ins, because I really like the Runaways themselves, but urgh. The issues do not look that good, sound pretty rubbish, and well, I don't like Kathryn Immonen. She's butchered Pixie in her own series, so I don't whether I'm going to like it, and the summary of the issues doesn't sound too good. And when I've got those four collected editions, it seems as if that'll be the last of me buying Runaways for quite a while, as we wait for Marvel to finish 'retooling' them...

Red Hood
The basic lineart of my design for Jason Todd as the Red Hood in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Obviously I'll be redoing this on the computer when I get a chance, but as of right now I don't have the proper tools to do this at home, only at work...

Review of this weeks Weekly Comics

Right, it's now the weekend. Time for me to review my latest weekly comic purchases. I did buy a couple more than I was going to, but that's cause I read the previews online and they looked interesting. So, without further ado, here's me reviewing comics :D

The Atom and Hawkman #46
This one was one I wasn't planning on buying until I read the first five pages - looked quite good from it. Now, admittedly, it does focus more on The Atom than it does on Hawkman, but really, what do you expect? Hawkman's sortof dead at the moment...
I still can't take the Atom's new costume seriously though, the tribal look has never suited him. Still, at least he's wearing trousers... Something I didn't get though was since when can Jean shrink? Still, the issue was good, it finally shows him moving on and getting over what Jean did by blowing her to smithereens. What a good way to deal with crazy ex wives.
Plus this comic provides more exposition on the Indigo Tribe, which is always nice, and with them being undead, we do get to see Ray being really badass (which he's done throughout the entire time he's been fighting Black Lanterns really).

Batman and Robin #7
Dammit Grant! I was going to drop this one if it wasn't very good, and although it was the usual confusing mess of Grant's latest comics, it had an interesting premise.
Question 1: Why was Batwoman in a coffin?
Question 2: Wasn't Batman's body buried? If so, who was risen by Nekron in Blackest Night?
Question 3: Who the hell designed those bikes? They're terrible...
Anywho, the artwork in this issue was alright, nothing special, don't get why Quitely's not been doing this since issue 3. His artwork really does suit Grant's form of storytelling (a jumbled jigsaw that forms a mostly understandable picture when finished). And huzzah for Damian being looked after by Talia. Relegated to just two pages of this issue. Two pages too many, but was a damn relief...
And whoever did the word bubbles on page 19 really needs a slap. You'll see what I mean when you get there...

Detective Comics #861
Now, I don't know how I can review this. I'm just a big damn fanboy for the main feature in this... Still, I can try. Plus, it's got Jock doing the internal artwork, who I do really like. What's nice that although you can tell it's definitely his drawings, he does channel a little bit of J.H. Williams III, who is another damn good artist whose non-showing in these issues is a shame, but more than made up with Jock's appearance. The story itself is pretty average, the usual creepy killer stalker ideal woman making chappy, but he's got a cool and somewhat creepy appearance. Unique at that... But would people stop stabbing Batwoman? She does seem to have a "Stab Me" sign on her... And another nice thing? A realistic thermal scanner. Wow...
On the second feature, well, I was a little disappointed with it. Neither were bothered about there secret identities being compromised, why couldn't they just have beat him up and stolen his laptop, etc etc? Did seem quite out of character and I agree with Tot on that one... I did like Zeiss' Terminator vision though, and the artwork was good, as always.

Gotham City Sirens #8
This was an interesting one - not a silly jokey comic like the other Sirens, but a more serious, one issue plot, er, issue... It was strange as it was written by an artist, like the current Batman issues, except someone else wrote the dialogue, and it was actually a non-confusing, well thought out story. On it's own I did enjoy it, the artwork was pleasant yet not eye-poppingly good. It actually reminded my of Dark Knight Returns, what with the TV segments and layout in places. All in all, shame it wasn't a silly one, but good that it was a serious one, if that makes sense...

Green Lantern #50
Holy smeg on a cracker was this comic awesome. So Mera never wanted children and then vomits on Aquababy? The Atom suddenly learns Indigoean (yeah, let's make up a name for their Nok Rol'ing language), which was a bit strange, and then the Spectre finally shows up after quite a while of nothing and shows why he shouldn't be allowed as a hero (you know what I mean). Now, sure, Geoff can't really write the Scarecrow, but come on, we meet the Fear-asaurus again.
On a note I hadn't really thought about until now, but hasn't Wonder Woman become one of the most powerful (and slutty) beings in the universe now?

Justice League: Cry For Justice #6
It's great for me having not been reading Justice League itself, as it means I don't have to worry about the timing of this and that issue. It's a shame as I've enjoyed this mini-series alot, even if it does have it's problems. It's just a shame that JLA has to spoil alot of how this series ends. Also, does anyone know what happened to Mauro? He was doing all the art up until last issue, where he didn't do all the pages, and then he's only done the cover this issue... As it isn't as tight as it was with Mauro, which is a shame as it was really nice artwork. Anywho, the issue itself was mostly just Prometheus beating the shit out of 18 heroes (and 1 villain) before finally getting 'beaten'. This really was James upping Prometheus' villain counter ALOT. It's just a shame his final plan was just revenge, as he's been doing alot of work to get this far. Now, I've always liked James' end of issue commentaries, as it were, a nice bit of the behind the scenes, his own likes and dislikes, and his acknowledgement that this isn't a perfect piece...
It's just a shame we have a Batwoman origin, as we just had her origin over the last three issues of Detective Comics... Personally Vixen, Starfire, Firestorm or Donna Troy (although her's might well be impossible, considering her history) would've been a better choice. Maybe that's just me though?

Superman: Secret Origin #4
A quick review as although this isn't the last review alphabetically, it is the last one I'm writing... Artwork was good as always, the story was solid, though it really isn't much of a 'secret origin'. Just a nice and strong new post-whatever-Crisis origin story that doesn't change much but is just damn solid...

Teen Titans #79
This was another I bought because of the preview I read online - the artwork's clear and concise, it focuses alot on Static (I'm trying out Milestone in the DCU stuff ya see), and the story seemed interesting from what I could tell. And yes, it was all three of those. The problem I had is that I didn't know about half the characters. I didn't even know there was a new Aquagirl on the team, had no idea who this silver girl was (and can she become that brown haired chick?), I'm assuming Cyborg isn't part of the team anymore, and where's Static been all this time? I assume with the Titans, but then why hasn't he called etc. Still, it didn't hamper the story too much. Just one last question: where did Megan go after she had a migraine? She just vanished.
I can't review the Ravager second feature as I hadn't followed that and it was in the middle of a story. Looked good if I knew exactly what was happening though...

And now I'm burnt out from all this reviewing. So, just to finish off this post:
DAMN YOU MORRISON!!!

Upcoming Reviews and upcoming comics

TI'm still at work at the moment, and haven't finished reading some of them yet, but you guys will be getting a treat of reviews from me during the next few days - new comic book tomorrow, so mini reviews of them, plus I got Utopia (X-Men/Dark Avengers) today, Final Crisis a couple of days ago and I've been re-reading the entire Age of Apocalypse, alongside the still to do reviews of Titans of Tomorrow and All Hail Megatron. So some really big things to review, some not so event type comics. I do expect to give up with Batman & Robin, Batman, Magog, but I'm looking forward to Great Ten (as always) and Milestone Forever next week. I did enjoy When World's Collide, and I'd never heard of Milestone before then, so oughta be a good un.

I mean to pick up Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance too, as that's only a few weeks away, and I can't remember why I didn't pick it up at the time. Oh, yeah, cause I hadn't read Final Crisis then, and it was a bit more focused on the aftermath than Ink, which could be summed up in a sentance (bad guy becomes good guy). Simple - The Super Young Team, well, you had to at least know them and who they were, which I didn't. I'll be giving Human Target a go, as it's only 6 issues long, and looks interesting. Never heard of the TV show it's based on though. Another one is The Web, which I actually don't know why I didn't start reading - might wait for the collecting edition (if any). We'll see...

First Wave is another one that has caught my eye, but it's not starting for a while yet. Didn't pick up the Batman/Doc Savage special, so that might impact on my reading somehow. Who knows yet? Again, with Nemesis, but that one less so. The Last Days of Animal Man I'll pick up in collected form...

All in all, it looks like a good couple of months from the DC side of life. I'll do the Marvel side when I get back home, as I get to clock out now and head off to that aforementioned place.

To Be Continued...

Make a Justice League/Avenger team

This does what it says on the tin. I'll give my ideas for teams, you give your ideas, and we all just discuss it - this is like your fantasy teams, ideal teams etc.

Teeny Update

Hopefully the stuff I ordered will come today, so I'll have something to read through this dry week of weekly comics (Green Lantern Corps is all this week, so I can do a mini review of that tomorrow)...
Got alot of TPBs ordered this time round, hopefully they'll be good:
  • Teen Titans: Titans Of Tomorrow
  • House of M
  • Decimation: X-Men - The 198
  • Secret Invasion
  • All Hail Megatron 2 & 3
Yep, a bit of everything, DC, Marvel and Dreamwave (or is it IDW now? I forget)... Then, come next month, cue buying of some Ultimate X-Men collections.

PotD: MT week: part 4

It's too early to do much, so here's the picture for today. Sorry...

Who I Am, What I Review, etc

Righteo, this is just (hopefully) a short post to say what kindof of thing's you'll expect to read about about on this blog. I'm much more of a DC reader than a Marvel. Most Marvel stuff I wouldn't bother even picking up, like Spider-Man, anything about Wolverine, the Fantastic Four (who I loathe)... But things I have liked about them include the crossovers Civil War and I am liking what I've read of Dark Reign. I intend to get all the Ultimate X-Men books, and want to start reading any comic with Pixie in it. You know who I mean ;)

The one with pixie wings of course! So if anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.

I've read almost all of Age of Apocalypse (got the four big collected editions, and Exiles: AoA), enjoyed some of it, though the artwork was a bit lacking. And the story was quite disjointed...

Otherwise, I am definitly a DC guy - I don't buy Marvel singles, only collected editions. And with DC I buy some singles, but not a huuuuge amount. Where it not for Blackest Night, my comic buying would go down quite a bit (probably). I save things like JLA and JSA for collected editions, and buy things like Batgirl, GA/BC, Detective Comics with Batwoman, limited series like Superman: Secret Origins, Cry For Justice, Great Ten and Ink (which sadly finished :( I really enjoyed that, the artwork was good, though sometimes hard to tell who was who...). I'm quite likely to give up on the actual Batman books come next issue unles they get really good, as I haven't been particularly enjoying them, and I'm just sticking with GA/BC as GA's my fave character.

Lastly, but not leastly:
Bring. Back. Aquaman. Not the silly new one, no. The original, the best. With whatever; harpoon, waterhand, sentient Black Lantern zombie. I don't care. Just bring him damn well back :D

First post, first review, so yeah...

Righteo, so, here we are then. Me, writing a blog. Oh dear oh dear, what has the world come to? Still, this won't be a blog of anything pointless, like what happens in my life. Oh no, not at all. Unless of course you count my drawings, which, well, could make an appearance here and there. Who knows, cause I certainly don't.

Now then, enough with the blathering. Today I'm going to review something which is pretty recent, something I really liked the first time I read it, and can't put it down whenever I re-read it. Obviously something like this has gotta be pretty damn good, and I can't see I've seen anyone ever comment on this tale, so I'll let myself be the first person I've seen to have a crack at writing a review on this comic.

And what is it, you may pray tell? Well, it is Superman | Batman : The Search For Kryptonite aka issues 44-49 of Superman/Batman, written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson, pencilled by Shane Davis, inked by Mike "Batt" Banning, coloured by Alex Sinclair and Pete Pantazis, and lettered by Rob Leigh. (Yes, I am going to do that for every review I do, even small ones, but it wouldn't be right to not give full credit to the ever changing staff who make these wonderous little things. Thank you one and all, including everyone I can't name, like editors, printers, publishers, adminers, coffee stirrers and everyone else involved in this wonderous industry. You make my life a brighter and gaudier place to live in).

This tale begins brilliantly - a humerous take on the film industry making a comic book film (how appropriate considering my line of work), an incredibly stupid origin of Batman and the worst actor I've seen since, well, ever... After that, the main premise behind the story takes hold, and, addresses a key point of comics that's become especially blatant with Smallville: "Kryptonite is everywhere. It's ubiquitous. It's embarrassing."

I won't bother to summarise the rest of the comic, as I don't see the point when you can just read it. Instead, I'll point out some of the bits that I particularly liked:

- The dynamic between the new Aquaman and Supes/Bats. I've never particularly liked what happened to Aquaman, they really messed him around, then shunted him off and put a new kid in his shoes. Bleh. But at least here he's been arrogant, but not an arsehole like Damian, not getting on my nerves or anything. He's doing what he thinks is right, what he feels is best for his home, and, yeah, wanting to beat the crap out of Superman.

- It really gets under both the title characters skins, showing their inner workings brilliantly. Especially the bit during Dinosaur Island; Batman is stubborn, an arse, and completely dedicated to his 'friends'. And this is not the normal Superman, this is a Superman obsessed for the greater good of the world, who will sacrifice his own life as he recognises his own higher calling. I've never been the biggest fan of Superman (shock, horror), but he's someone who is needed, the just of the just, as it were.

- It's epic yet heartfelt at the same time; we've got Superman and Batman patrolling the entire world, going into space beyond the Watchtower, exploring magic islands and fighting Kryptonite super soldiers, while still being human and keeping the story personal. It's something that Superman/Batman can do really well, as it has the two constant internal monologues, while other stories generally spread them around a bit too much. And that bit with Lana, well, I don't get why that happened, but, well, wow. Someone's learned a lot from Kristin Kreuk...

- The artwork, the designs, all of it's just really good. Superman's lead suit is damn cool, as is AquaBats, the (non-regularly seen) supporting cast all look good. It's just highly polished in that respect. I do have to tip my heart to all the artists involved in this. It takes a damn good tale and just keeps on adding. The only flaw I can say about it, save the classic 'Batman's cowl should have those dags in it by the side' is the Phantom Stranger's eye shadow looked dodgy. And yes, that's my only complaint about the artwork here.

And the great thing about this comic in the end is that I can't slag off the ending for it being too convenient, as it's all established (which some writers still can't grasp, I'm looking at you Russell T. Davis), the writings top notch, the art is damn pretty to look at.

By now I'm sure you're fed up of me prattling on about this comic, so I'll just say: go and read it, enjoy it, love it. And now, with my first review all done, I'll just leave you with those immortal words of Saint Walker:
“All will be well”
